Although not an ex-member of SYM, I am fortunate to have had the opportunity growing up to learn a musical instrument from a young age. I, without doubt, made the most of the opportunities offered to me and even today music plays a huge role in my personal and professional life. I studied Music and Primary Education as a combined degree and graduated in 2006 from St. Martin's College, Lancaster, having held the Organ Scholarship for three years. I am currently the Head of Music and Curriculum Lead of Sidegate Primary School where we our proud to offer a curriculum steeped in the arts and enriched by our partnership with the County Music Service. Outside of work I am a regular organist for churches in the Alde River Benefice and the parish church of St. Mary's Combs where I enjoy playing regularly for services and weddings. The opportunities I had as a youngster have opened many doors, from a university place to a career in teaching; those early opportunities have enriched my life beyond all measure - I simply cannot imagine life without it. I have chosen to support SMART because I believe strongly that the arts in its widest form should be available to all young people and crucially, want to do what little I can towards ensuring that young people engaged in the arts aren't denied access to the opportunities I had growing up - the ones that opened so many doors.

Head of Music

My daughter was a member of SYM from 2006 to 2014. She benefited from excellent music tuition, firstly on Saturday mornings and then on Friday evenings with the South Suffolk Youth Orchestra. She went on to play for the Suffolk Wind Band and the Suffolk Youth Orchestra, touring in Europe each summer for 5 years. This experience helped her to develop her musicianship to a very high standard; it also developed many of the "soft skills" she required to enter the world of employment, e.g. self-confidence, collaboration, leadership, perseverance, resilience. After completing her degree at the University of Manchester, she was offered a position with the Royal Northern Sinfonia management team at Sage Gateshead.

I am also the headteacher of Sidegate Primary School. I believe that all children and young people should be able to access the opportunities that were afforded to my daughter and, as such, purchase Whole Class Ensemble Teaching for the pupils at my school. This gives them the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument and continue to play the instrument beyond these lessons, should they so wish. We also have a school band and choir. The Arts form an essential part of our school curriculum and I want to make sure that the young people of Suffolk have every opportunity to develop their talents and excel.

As a SCMS brass tutor, I have been a member of the teaching staff for Suffolk Youth Orchestra for the last 8 years and have been on multiple tours as both a van driver and staff member. I am graduate of the RNCM on bass trombone but also play tenor trombone, euphonium and sing.

Suffolk County Music Service Brass Tutor

I am presently Senior Vocal Tutor for Suffolk County Music Service, having worked for them for the past 17 years. I have teenage children, two of whom (both string players) were started off on violin at Primary School by a SCMS tutor (for free - in the days when schools could do this) and who subsequently joined Saturday Music School at Ipswich. Both are now in their third year with Suffolk Youth Orchestra. I have seen from the inside and from a parent’s perspective what music can do to nurture, challenge and support children and wholeheartedly support SMART.
